Meet our wonderful team!

Sarah Mullen - Director

Sarah spent the first 14 years of her career as a Solicitor with a city-centre law firm, spending every available lunchtime in bookshops or libraries. It seems inevitable that she would turn to bookselling...

Since launching Bournville BookFest in 2013, she has become a multiple award-winning Festival Director, Arts Producer and Bookshop owner. Winning multiple national and local awards, BookFest became one of the best-loved children's book festivals in the UK and Birmingham's only dedicated book festival for 0-12s.

Whilst growing Bournville BookFest, Sarah looked in vain for an independent bookseller to run the festival bookshop. When no-one could be found, Sarah's small and dedicated BookFest team rolled up their sleeves and ran the festival bookshop too.

When the pandemic hit, running Bournville BookFest was no longer financially viable, so Sarah and two wonderful friends opened The Bookshop on the Green in October 2020. It was a completely crazy time to open an independent bookshop! However, Sarah's local community were hugely supportive and the word began to spread of a small bookshop with a big heart and a warm welcome.

With a strong penchant for community interest projects, Sarah is a social entrepreneur. She is also Artistic Director for Hosking Houses Trust’s Open House Project, which provides a room of ones own to women writers, artists and creative practitioners over the age of 40.

Peri Cimen - Bookshop Manager

Peri Cimen is a Cypriot Turkish-British writer and photographer originally from North London. She graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2020 with a first-class degree in English with Philosophy, followed by a master's degree in Creative Writing in 2022.

As Manager of Green Heart Books, Peri assists Sarah with event organisation and bookselling and leads on staff management, social media marketing, graphic design and copywriting.

She is also a Publishing Assistant at independent Birmingham-based publisher The Emma Press.

Peri's favourite books are Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, The Idiot by Elif Batuman and Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre.

She highly recommends: Assembly by Natasha Brown, Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin and the poetry collection Poor by Caleb Femi.
